Tonight is the first of 6 nights of camping that I'll be doing in the next 9 days.

Tonight: Ward Camp-Out. I seriously would not be doing this - but I just can't forget about the Dutch Oven dinner from last year.

Tuesday - Thursday: Girl's Camp. sigh.

Friday - Sunday: Lake Powell. Yes, we camp at Lake Powell. We have been doing this my whole life - I have no idea what a house boat is like. I have a feeling that it involves lots of cooking and cleaning (or at least that's what we like to tell ourselves).

Good thing Hot Dave takes care of me so well. I have a killer sleeping pad and lots of camping gear to make me comfortable in the outdoors. Here's to sleeping under the stars.

All Summer long

There are few other things in life that I love more than Conan and Capitalism. Swimming is one of them. Not race/exercise swimming. Just being in water - pools, lakes, oceans, water-slides, whatever. My preference is the ocean, but since I live land-locked - I wanted a pool. My entire adult life has been revolving around how I can get my own pool. So, this weekend, I crossed it off my Bucket List and look forward to years of memories.

Redemption

I ran my first marathon in 2008. It was sort of a disaster - picture yourself running around Bear Lake by yourself (there were only 100 runners total) - the whole time you can see the finish line across the lake, but it seems to be getting further away. Then you get hit by a truck. Finally you finish at a sad time of 5:17. It was not a fun experience and I decided then and there I would never do that again. That was until my Brother Zach signed up for a marathon last year. It got me excited about running again. I just had to redeem myself.

Do you see that city across the lake? It's getting further away.

A couple of Ogden enthusiasts recruited me for Ogden Marathon 2011. Thanks to our Saturday morning running group: Emily, Melinda and Amelia. I could actually get through the long training runs without killing myself. Plus these girls are fast - so they pushed me to run faster.Here we are at the finish line:

Final times: 4:04; 4:19; 4:29

My final chip time was 4:19 - It was a fabulous race and I had the time of my life. Ogden runs a first class race, and you can't believe the scenery. I had an enthusiastic support team who arrived in Huntsville bright and early. I pretty much had a personal photographer documenting the entire race (maybe too many photos of my tired, swollen body).

Thanking me for not having to run 5 miles in sandals this time around just to make sure I finished

The biggest shout-out goes to my brother, Alex. Who got a lot of ridicule and nay-saying for not training enough for the race. Boy, did he show us. His final time was 4:39.

A large part of the Budget debate in Washington has to do with proposed cuts to welfare programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security). This is an obvious topic especially when you look at this very simplified chart of 2010 Annual Spending.One side of the argument likes to demonize those on the other side for not caring about children, women, elderly, and homeless. At the same time this was going on in congress - I saw something very different. Within 2 weeks, the following occurred in my very shallow existence of Reality TV and talkradio:

Celebrity Apprentice (no, this is not a Trump 2012 plug):
On this show, there are challenges based on fund-raising, and each team's ability to raise funds for their particular charity. In one challenge, this group of "mis-fit" celebrities were able to raise over $1.7 Million for charity.

Sample of Celebrities ($1.7 Million for real!!) :

Secret Millionaire:
In one episode, the "Secret Millionaires" were the owners of Curves. They gave away $500,000 to people and organizations doing good in the community. On the flip side - the receivers of their charity have dedicated their lives to helping others. They have used grassroots methods to make a difference in their community without subsidies from the government. Most of these organization run on private donations and volunteered time. (if you can stand the voice of the narrator- this show will give you hope in mankind again. A good contrast to Charlie Sheen coverage)

Cure-A-Thon 2011:
Every year Rush Limbaugh dedicates his entire program to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He uses his 3 hour radio program and his gigantic audience to raise money to fight blood cancers. In 3 hours - they raised over $3 Million. $1 Million an hour by Rush listeners only. Mega Dittos, Rush babies!

My point is, even in a rough economy with horrendous gas prices and record unemployment rates - people are still giving huge amounts of $$, time, and energy to charitable causes. if you can be inspired by Reality TV - just think of the inspiration surrounding us in real life.

This country is oozing with generous and compassionate people. The last thing they need is to be forced into it through taxation.

I spent a glorious sun-filled weekend in Huntington Beach (thanks Stef!). It included 2 full beach days, a wicked sun burn, farmer's market, a couple of fabulous low-altitude runs, QT with girlfriends, fried chicken and waffles, Ho-Sum Bistro, and listening to conference in swimsuits.

To come home to below freezing temps, work, no sun, and another month of winter. How did I get through it you ask?? Sky Magazine.

On my flight home, the Delta Sky Magazine had a 20 page feature on Utah. It was just what I needed to remind me of why I love the state I live in. California has it perks, but so does Utah. Here are a few:

Unemployment rate: 7.4% (National average 9.5%)
Average composite SAT score: 1718 (National average 1565)
Median Age: 28.7 (National average 36.7)

3rd longest life expectancy in the nation
Lowest per-capita costs for health care in the nation
Lowest debt-per-capita state in the nation
Utah residents collectively speak 90% of the world's written languages

Beyond being one of the most fiscally conservative states in the country - it is also one of the most beautiful. I love the desert. I love dry heat and summer nights. I love the lakes and the wide open spaces in every direction. I also love my job, my house, my family and friends. So, here's to $1 Coke at McDonalds and living in Utah forever.

Spring Fever

I busted out my favorite spring wedding bracelet today in honor of bright blue skies.
Happy days are here again! Not only is the sun shining, but it will be out until 8pm. I may even fit in a night run for the first time. Also, Snooki moved out and the judgement was granted. So - bring on the wage garnishments and a new renter (hopefully).

Bright Side

This week I was dealing with hair I don't like and trying to evict Snooki from our condo. I had to pay $185 and work with an incompetent state employee just to start the process (which could take weeks) of evicting this girl. Just MOVE out! I don't even care about rent $! I just want you to move out, so I don't have to deal with the completely ridiculous legal system.

It's Friday and things are looking up. I'm getting my hair fixed and I won't have to run in a blizzard tomorrow. Hooray!

Speaking of bad hair...This is the not the hair I was referring to above. This is amazing hair and my attempt at Carrie Bradshaw short hair curls. I know it failed miserably. But it should put you all in a good mood. Thanks Melinda!

Traditions

This is a rough time of year - especially with the cold winter we have had. It is a good thing that I believe in strong traditions/routines to get me through the week.

Monday:
The Bachelor: This happens at either my house, my mom's house, or my Grandma's house. You have to watch it with a group - as it is way more fun. And you would never guess who is the most into this show - My Dad. He refuses to hear the Reality Steve Spoilers.

House: I watch this in bed when I get home from The Bachelor watching. Does anyone else miss "13" and Cameron?

Tuesday:
The Biggest Loser: This happens at The Bell's house. I believe this is our 4th season of watching this together - it is a fabulous tradition. I get to see my friends and their cute baby girl Caroline every week. Our favorite part is acting surprised at how bad Ali Sweeney is dressed - it can't be that hard to look worse than 400+ lbers in spandex - but somehow she does it.

Raising Hope: This is THE best new show on TV. I watch this with Dave when I get home from Biggest Loser. Martha Plimpton (Braces girl from The Goonies) is having the best career comeback ever. Give this girl an Emmy.

Wednesday:
Modern Family: Dave and I watch this one together as well. I think all you peeps know the brilliance of this show. Best Character ever: Phil Dunphy

Law and Order SVU: I start this one late at night in bed while Dave falls asleep. It's the best - as it gives me the most vivid dreams about murder, rape, and police work.

Thursday:
Dave and I watch the whole line up together: The Office, Parks and Recreation, and 30 Rock.

Friday/Saturday:
These are more relaxed days - but I still get in a good amount of TV watching. The Soup, 20/20, 48 hours real life mysteries, anything on the E channel.

Sunday:
CBS Sunday Morning: Old person show for real. 90 min long- starts at 8am on Sunday. My parents turned us on this and it gives us something to discuss around the Sunday dinner table.
I watch this after church next to my space heater.

Everyday:
Of course I watch Conan every night - it is usually really late, so I watch until I fall asleep, then I finish up the episode while I get ready in the morning. Nothing like ending and starting your day with Conan.

Soon to come:
The Amazing Race (Sunday), Survivor (Wed), and Celebrity Apprentice (I think Thursday). Can't wait to fit these in to my life.

I love deals. I think I like deals more than most people. I only shop where I know everything is 50% of retail value. I honestly haven't stepped into a mall in years. - Except for The Gateway last Saturday trying to get a new phone.
Anyways. There is an new trend going around of these "Daily Deals" I think there are a million different people doing it. I'm signed up for a few of these and get emails everyday of the deal I can't pass up. For awhile, the offers weren't that compelling. They weren't places I wanted to eat, and I wasn't in the market for a photography session or oil change. But something changed this month, they have me clicking that little "buy it" button everyday - They caught me, just like they caught my sister 2 months ago.

3 things I didn't know about Conan's new show until this week:

1) Where is Max?? I had no idea Max wouldn't be returning as the band leader

2) 9:00pm and 11:00pm. 2 times a night? Is that a way of testing the market or do they really not have anything else to show on TBS

3) Only 4 nights a week! What? This was news to me. Monday - Thursday is all. I guess they don't want to interrupt their popular "Dinner and a Movie" segments on Friday nights.

Ironman

This past Saturday, they were holding an Ironman race in St.George. From 7am to Midnight, 2300 people swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and then ran 26.2 miles. It was awesome. I found myself totally sucked into the excitement and wanted to give as much encouragement to these people who trained and sacrificed so much to become an “Ironman”. It is really amazing what men and women can accomplish and thousands gathered to acknowledge those participating.

This week, in the mist of trying to regulate the financial markets, President Obama said “I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money”.Voices for Reason wrote a great post about this statement, and when I read it, it reminded me of the Ironman race. At no point did I hear someone in the crowd say “I do think at a certain point they should just give up”. There was no judging of personal accomplishments, only encouragement.

Here is the perfect response to President B.O.’s statement
“You assume rational self-interest is simply ensuring one’s physical luxury. But what would a man do with himself once he has those millions. He would stagnate. No man who has used his mind enough to achieve a fortune is going to be happy doing nothing. The motive to earn unlimited rewards come from the producer’s desire for unlimited achievement. We encourage unlimited physical achievement and reward it with awe. We should be doing the same with financial achievements.

Conan on Tour

The Official Review

Things I loved:

1) Conan live in the flesh

2) Being a part of his first ever tour (and very likely his last)

3) Conan without NBC Wardrobe/Makeup people. He had a beard, no tie, no gel in his hair, and no makeup. It was wild

4) Walker Texas Ranger lever

5) His 6 musical numbers. I love seeing Conan play the guitar and sing.

6) Encore song – He literally did an Encore, just like any rock star. It was awesome

7) The original Late Night band – minus Max.

8) Reliving it the next day as I told Friends and Family about it. Just ask, I’ll tell you all the jokes.

Things I didn’t love:

1) The show was less than an hour.

2) 7 Min of Deon Cole stand-up (This is one of Conan’s Tonight show writers. Come on, I came to see Conan)

3) Triumph video appearance. I know he is part of the Late Night family, but he wore out his welcome 5 years ago.

4) Andy’s Solo Act – I really love Andy, but his 5 min solo act was not his best work.

5) Not enough Conan!

All in All it was awesome. Review of his 60 min interview to come. Juicy stuff.

Weekend of Conan

Today is a great Friday because it is the eve of my Weekend with Conan.

Saturday: Me, Conan and around 5,000 others will be meeting up at The Palms in Las Vegas to enjoy a good laugh together.
Sunday: Conan and his beard (super sexy) will be on 60 minutes to dive into his true feelings about Leno, NBC, and his new gig.

In regards to his tour, every night he has had a special guest. I have been speculating on who it will be on Saturday. I'm thinking some big Vegas star, like Wayne Newton, but my heart is hoping for William Shatner.

Not my Year

As I take a look back over the past few years. One year in particular has stood out to me, 2008. It was a good one. In 2008 I met Conan and he flirted with me, I ran my first and last marathon, and completed my pilgrimage to the Holy Land (literally). It was a good year for my bucket list.

2010 is another story. In less than 3 months, my little world has been shocked and tossed. My rock, Conan was pulled from the air with less than a weeks warning. Yesterday, my other rock, $$$, was spit upon by the leaders of the USA. My productivity and hard work is nothing but something they can take from me with another huge piece of legislation.

The only thing I could do about it was plan a vacation to the Yucatan. Thanks Holly! I have a feeling 2010 will look much better come May 8^th.

** Update on this. It turns out that Jimmy's brother, Scott M. Matherson, Jr., has been nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. This is interesting timing, especially when Jimmy is one of 10 house Dems that they are hoping change their vote on health care. Is this Chicago politics or just a coincidence? Hold strong Jim.

My celebrity look alike is Ellen Degeneres. This is what I have been told and even those who don't bring it up find themselves saying "I can see that" after I mention it. Some people are named after heros of history, or glamorous movie stars. Some people even look like those glamorous movie stars. I was named after a woman in a pant suit, and I now look like a lesbian version of that woman in a pant suit.

That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over "The Tonight Show" in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my "Tonight Show" in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move "The Tonight Show" to 12:05 to accommodate "The Jay Leno Show" at 11:35. For 60 years "The Tonight Show" has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. "The Tonight Show" at 12:05 simply isn't "The Tonight Show." Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the "Late Night" show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of "The Tonight Show." But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with "The Tonight Show," I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Why did the US Senate pass it in the middle of the night?
Why was it completely partisan? Not one Republican senator voted for it.

*Senator Ben Nelson got an unprecedented deal to force federal taxpayers to pick up 100% of the cost of Nebraska's Medicaid expansion--forever.

*Connecticut's Senator, Christopher Dodd, got a $100 million earmark for a hospital at the University of Connecticut.

*Vermont Senators Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders, who had been threatening to oppose the bill from the Left, got an extra $250 million in Medicaid funding.

*In Florida, Senator Bill Nelson got three counties carved out of Medicare Advantage cuts that will happen everywhere else in the country.

*Of course we know about the "Louisiana Purchase" where Reid and Obama paid $300 million of our taxpayer dollars to the pet projects of Senator Landrieu to secure her vote.

I guess I should explain the previous post regarding the show in L.A. Here is how it went:

With the entire Helm family going to Newport Beach for a week in July, I jumped right on the the chance to get tickets to Conan's new show on the west coast. The ticket process is a lottery via email. Out of the 8 emails we sent, we received two sets (4 tickets each) of tickets. One set for Tuesday night and one set for Friday night. I planned to attend the Tuesday night showing. With the revelation that Heidi Klum would be a guest that night, I offered my ticket to a long time admirer of hers, Jon. (Click for an account of his experience) while I anticipated the show on Friday.

To brave the L.A. traffic to reach Universal Studios. We reach the Universal property with about 7 min to spare, but after being led to a dead end and then taking some back roads to Gate 3, we arrived at about 3:35 - 3:37. The cut off time was 3:30. They did not care that we had tickets, or that I write a blog dedicated 1/3 to Conan. I was so disappointed, I couldn't bring myself to watch the show for 3 days.

The trip wasn't a complete lost, I did go to Mann's Chinese Theater for the first time. Here was a highlight...

I recently visited Disneyland. I couldn’t resist being there for my favorite human’s 1^st experience in such a capitalistic magical place.

I just finished watching Conan's Premier and here is my official review

The Intro: New Graphics and a fun twist on the Late Night song.

The Studio: It's Huge! It seats twice as many people as his old studio which increases my chances of going to the show. I am trying to get tickets for July right now. Pray for it.

The Monologue: String dance included. He made some cracks at V.P. Biden, and the demise of NBC. Loved it.

The Skit: In all his glory, his best work. This was classic Conan, taking over a tour at Universal Studios. Some highlights include his melodramatic crying over a fake bridge collapse, and buying everyone on the tour an item at the $.99 store.

The Guest: Will Farrell. I was really hoping for Will Arnette, but I was pleasantly surprised by Farrells interview. It was very funny.

The Band: Pearl Jam. Sorry for knocking them in a earlier post, but after the performance, they deserved it. They have seen better days. What was most charming is Conan's love for music and how excited he gets about bands he likes.

The Announcer: Andy Richter. He stood at a pulpit behind the cameras. I bet he missed being in the chair right next to the host. I am interested to see where he will fit into future shows... maybe he is just the new Joel.

Summary: I just smiled for an hour straight. It is great to have him back on TV. Who else has their favorite show on every day all year long. Lucky girl I am.

P.S. after my last post, I went straight to Amazon to purchase a book. TV isn't my whole life, Just a good portion of my evenings.

Guess what happens tonight! You should all know this but as a reminder, tune in tonight for Conan's first show in L.A.

The guests are Will Farrell (shamelessly promoting Land of Lost at every opportunity) and Pearl Jam (so retro, and they still have fans (like Libby)). Neither of these interest me when you have Conan O'brien on the stage. I can't wait to have him back on TV every night. The web videos, Magazine interviews, and re-watching episodes have not satisfied my Consie addiction.

Mark Levin just released a book Titled “Liberty and Tyranny”. I heard him in an interview this week. And I love his perspective on Liberty. (This is a transcript from a radio interview, so not nearly as eloquent as his writing, I’m sure)

“Well, first of all, people need to understand that the greed comes from government. The government wants to take 60%, 70% of what you earn at all levels of government, and it hasn't earned a thing. So here's the way we need to understand it. Labor. Labor is the time you spend working, whether it's an intellectual pursuit or a hands-on type pursuit. You have a finite amount of time on earth. So this is precious time. This is your liberty, your time that you're spending to earn this income. So when somebody says that you've earned too much after working as you have using all your abilities to do what you do, to create a comfortable living for yourself, and somebody in the government tells you, "Well, that's not good enough" -- and they want to take your money not for the legitimate purposes of government, as stated in the Constitution, but to redistribute wealth or some other outrageous Marxist-type theory, socialist-type theory -- they are stealing literally time out of your life, your liberty that you spent earning this money, earning this private property legitimately. We need to explain that the free market is the most transformative of economic systems, and it fosters creativity and inventiveness. It produces all these industries and products and services that the statist wants to control and tax. The statist creates nothing.

You know, people need to look around, because liberty permeates. It's so broad; it's so wide that when you're born into it, a lot of times you don't recognize it and you think it's going to be here forever. Aspects of it will, but it's going to be severely curtailed if those who do not respect liberty and do not respect private property rights and do not respect the labor that somebody applies to a skill or whatever and earns his own money, that liberty is going to be severely diminished. Liberty is precious, and that is what we want to defend.”

President Barack Obama and millions of his fellow citizens are fuming over the $165 million (that’s million) in bonuses handed out to AIG executives after the insurance giant received billions (billions) in federal bailout money. There is a growing move on Capitol Hill to somehow force AIG to repay the money. But the bonuses were part of employees’ contracts, and thus legally binding.

"One way or another, we're going to try to figure out how to get these resources back," said Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., the panel's chairman.

"This is ridiculous," exclaimed Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont. He said AIG executives "need to understand that the only reason they even have a job is because of the taxpayers."

"I mean, how do they justify this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat?" Obama demanded.

This is almost laughable if it wasn’t so depressing… This coming from an administration that passed a $700 Billion bill (taxpayers $) without even reading it. Let’s turn this around.

Chris Dodd, I ask you “How do we get $700 billion of our money back? How do we get the value of our hard earned dollar back?”

Jon Tester, I remind you “The only reason you have a job is because of taxpayers.”

And Finally, My favorite, President Obama “How do you justify this outrage of passing bill after bill of absolute waste then lecturing us and accusing private citizens of acting irresponsible”

I apologize ahead of time for the melodrama, but my blog world is literally crashing around me.

First, Conan has been off the air for almost 2 weeks now, and my DVR is confused about what to do with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. With more than 2 months before his Tonight Show debut, this portion of the blog is going to struggle.

Second, Capitalism is dying and we are only in to the first 45 days of His presidency. With just shy of 4 years before this nightmare ends, I can't decide if I am going to busier or just too discouraged to write.

I need some encouragement. please help.

I know, I missed a day. I am just a little overwhelmed with what is taking place tonight. I would invite everyone over to watch the last episode of Late Night together. But this is something I need to do on my own.

My second to last highlight is the merging of 2 great Television icons. This came about when Conan was doing a week of shows in San Fransisco. He went out to tour the city and knocked on the door of the Full House house. This turned in to the opening credits of Full House, with Conan as part of the cast. Sing it with me... "Everywhere you look, everywhere, there's a heart..."

Okay... I almost forgot! For a few weeks, it may have even been a whole month, Conan had a little tool at his desk call the "Walker Texas Ranger Lever" This thing was amazing. He would play clip after clip, and just laugh. This was a great time at Late Night. Here is a little sampling:

This blogging everyday thing is a challenge. But there are only 5 more days of late night, and this is important. This is as important as looking into the future. The future?? Yes, all the way to the year 2000...

You can't talk about Late Night without mentioning it's most famous character (besides Conan), Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. After premiering on the show in 1997, Triumph was a reoccuring guest who ruthlessly harassed celebrity guests as well as numerous event attendees. There are so many Triumph classics, but this one is particularly funny. When I say particularly funny, I mean one of the funniest things ever done in comedy.
